Larins Sahib

Back to Plays Done

Play Name Larins Sahib
Year 1967
Plot
Summary Larins Sahib is a historical play set in the confused period after the death of Ranjit Singh when the British first arrived in Punjab. The protagonist of the play is Sir Henry Lawrence, a British Colonel who became very popular in Punjab for being very ‘Indian’, in some ways like Lawrence of Arabia. The play traces the development of hubris, which brings about the hero's downfall.
Larins Sahib was Gurcharan Das’s first play, who until he heard about the Sultan Padamsee Playwriting Award had never even thought about writing a play. Larins Sahib went on to win the first the Sultan Padamsee Playwriting Award.
